When we started the project, we knew it was a good opportunity to redesign how we used the existing space at the rear of the house. We broke into the existing kitchen and utility room and basically started again with a blank canvas.
The extension itself has gone out 3.9 meters, and the pitched roof has become a feature of the room. Plus we have two skylight windows which really helps to keep the place bright. At first, the pillar in the centre of the room seemed like a big inconvenience, but by building the breakfast table around it, again, it's become another bold feature of the room. We actually widened it, and it draws the distinction between the kitchen and the relaxing area.
For the small amount of space we have added, it looks huge. It makes a cosy room which was perfect as we didn’t want anything formal.
It's a lounging room and we have a built in music system too. We've just hosted our Christmas party here and it was great. We got great feedback on the room from everyone (the mother in-law wants one now!)
I didn’t want a conservatory because its too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, I wanted a room where I could feel comfortable. The insulation is very thick, and we have underfloor heating and it also works well under carpets. We also have an air conditioning system, and it makes the extention a real part of the house rather than a bit that was stuck on later.
With Space4Living, the difference is that they offer everything - under-floor heating; the flooring; windows; fascias; kitchens etc. you can simply go and have a look and tell them what you want, and they present their showroom really, really well. The satisfaction at the end is brilliant. |
